The glass menagerie

After reading through the lay, "the glass menagerie" I understood there were a variety of different conflicts throughout. One main conflict that was found was secret and unfulfilled dreams. Growing up everyone expects hardships to bypass them and when they actually come, everyone is caught off guard. In the play the character Tom has been through many problems that would be labeled unfortunate. Growing up without a correct father figure is something every young man regrets which causes a lifelong affect. Over the period of his life he lived with a drunken abandoned father who came home on his own time until he stopped coming home. In the play, Tom reminisces on the past and how the opportunity of him following his dreams was taken due to the fact that he has a family to take care of and tries to make his life better by going on different secret adventures at night. This secret on his whereabouts was kept concealed by Tom from Amanda and Laura. As Amanda becomes persistent in questioning Tom's evening journeys(she thinks he is not actually going to the movies)he tries to relieve her by making up this lie, "Im going to opium dens of vice and criminals... Im a hired assassin(page 24)."The play also gives example of unfulfilled dreams as Amanda talks to Laura about her future with school and finding a suitor who will take care of her. This family gives proof that being a family is very hard sometimes and that everything is not what it seems. I can connect this story to my actual life because my dad is sort of like Tom the way that he's had so many visions and dreams for himself that were not achieved due to outside factors.
I can also connect my mom's expectations of me to Amanda's of Laura. Both force the idea of finding a potential mate and being thee best available.

  1. I agree with you on how hard it is for Tom to grow up without a father. I also believe that without a father figure this affects Laura as well because identity comes mainly from the father, and without that Laura has less self esteem and is extra shy.
