A common theme I have discovered in the Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams is secretiveness. Amanda has high expectations and admiration for her two children, knowing they go to school and work every day to make a life for themselves. But one day, when concerned with Laura’s recent cold and missing school work, Amanda stops by Rubicam’s Business College to speak to the teachers, and they have no idea who Laura is (Scene Two). Amanda then asks, “Laura where have you been going when you’ve gone out pretending that you were going to business college?” Laura replies that she has just been walking, going to art museums, and the zoo- all keeping this from her mother, making her believe that she has been attending school every week, just to keep her from being disappointed. With Tom, Amanda also grows suspicious of his whereabouts. He always uses the same line of “going to the movies” (Scene Four). She tells him he spends entirely too much time at the movies, and it doesn’t make sense to go there every night. But he explains to her since he has no adventure at work, he goes to watch films. It makes me wonder, is Tom really telling the truth about spending each night at the movies, or is he just lying to his mother? Again, Tom shows his secretiveness when he and Amanda see a silver moon in the sky and make a wish. (Scene Five) When Amanda asks Tom what he wished for, he replies with “That’s a secret”. But Amanda is not as reluctant to share her wish with her son. I chose this image, because it truly captures Amanda and Tom out on the fire escape as they look up and wish upon the moon. Tom is facing away from Amanda, showing that he does not feel completely comfortable around her.
