A common theme I have discovered in the Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams is secretiveness. Amanda has high expectations and admiration for her two children, knowing they go to school and work every day to make a life for themselves. But one day, when concerned with Laura’s recent cold and missing school work, Amanda stops by Rubicam’s Business College to speak to the teachers, and they have no idea who Laura is (Scene Two). Amanda then asks, “Laura where have you been going when you’ve gone out pretending that you were going to business college?” Laura replies that she has just been walking, going to art museums, and the zoo- all keeping this from her mother, making her believe that she has been attending school every week, just to keep her from being disappointed. With Tom, Amanda also grows suspicious of his whereabouts. He always uses the same line of “going to the movies” (Scene Four). She tells him he spends entirely too much time at the movies, and it doesn’t make sense to go there every night. But he explains to her since he has no adventure at work, he goes to watch films. It makes me wonder, is Tom really telling the truth about spending each night at the movies, or is he just lying to his mother? Again, Tom shows his secretiveness when he and Amanda see a silver moon in the sky and make a wish. (Scene Five) When Amanda asks Tom what he wished for, he replies with “That’s a secret”. But Amanda is not as reluctant to share her wish with her son. I chose this image, because it truly captures Amanda and Tom out on the fire escape as they look up and wish upon the moon. Tom is facing away from Amanda, showing that he does not feel completely comfortable around her.

  1. I believe that Tom and Laura are secretive with their mother because they know she would disapprove of their actions. Amanda puts so much pressure on the both of them, the only way they can do what they want without being criticized is to be secretive with her. Amanda constantly brings both Laura and Tom down without even realizing it, even thought she thinks she's just being a good mother.

  2. I think secrets are in every family because we don't want to disappoint anyone. Laura had lied to Amanda because she didn't her to be upset that she couldn't be who Amanda wanted her to be. I believe Amanda pushes them away by having these high expectations that make Laura and Tom lie to her.

  3. It is very clear that the whole family keeps secretes from each other. From where Tom really goes when he out passed 2 o'clock in the morning to Laura saying she is going to school even though she really isn't. That was a good observation and something I really didn't notice until I read your post, thanks for mentioning it.

  4. The siblings feel there only way of peace is movies, her glass ornaments, fire escape, or just plain walking around. They keep things from their mother cause they don't wanna disappoint her. All they will hear is constant yelling. I couldn't imagine trying to please my mom when I have to live through her eyes. I would get frustrated and do everything i can just to have some quiet time.

  5. in any house hold of relationship, we always want to make our counterparts happy and with happiness also comes betrayal. In the story you talked about the event when Amanda found out Laura wasn't actually going to school, which hurt her but Laura only made up the lie so her mother wouldn't question her and be proud, not realizing that the truth always comes out the darkness.
