The
Glass Menagerie Post 1
Throughout the play “The Glass
Menagerie” by Tennessee Williams, Tom and Laura have to live up to what their mother
wants them to be in life. Tom tries to get away from the apartment but the only
way is to go to the “the movies” or the “fire escape”. Laura is more quiet but
told her mother she has been going to business school the whole time and her
mother is not giving up on trying to find her a husband. Even though I only
read 5 scenes I can understand why the mother is very hard on her children. She
wants the best for her children but is way too hard on them. She doesn’t understand
that they want to live their own life. The mother always says “we” when she is
talking about her children’s futures. To many people it seems that she is
wanting to make their life the way she wanted hers. “Is that the future that we’ve
mapped out for ourselves?” (Williams Scene 2). This quote shows how their mother
is depending on them to make her life right. By making them eat perfect, to
make Laura find a husband and go to school and Tom cannot leave until he helps
Laura get a husband.
This picture connects with what people say about the
mother not letting them be themselves and live the life she wants. As the
picture says “many parents will do anything for their kids-except let them be
themselves”, which the mother does not let them do. Laura shows she does not
want a husband but her mother keeps pushing her to make sure she gets the life
she always wanted.
I am glad you included the pattern of Amanda refurring to her and her childrens issues as something they share, and how she always says "we" and "our" when referring to their futures. I agree that she is very protective and overbearing and i think your photo does a great interpretation on how she feels as if she is helping them, but in reality is harming them because now they must lie to her on where they are going in order to experience freedom.

DeleteYou are right, she thinks she is helping them but really holding them back. As for most parents they set their children up for the future but let them be who they are to see if they can make it. If they needed help on the way they would be there for them. As for Amanda she is trying to stay with them every step of the way. She needs to let her children be themselves.
Do you think most of the pressures have to do with generations? Each generation has been faced with different pressures and a lot of people either have a hard time getting over it or at over it in a second. I think Amanda is so stuck in the past that she can't see the future. It's like she's almost living through her mothers eye and giving her the same expectations to Laura.
