The Glass Deception

The theme of deception is apparent throughout the first five scenes. It first jumps out at the reader when the mother, Amanda, comes home from her D.A.R. meeting, shown in the clip above. Before she walks in mumbling under her breath “Deception? Deception?” (Williams 11, line 28), it is clear that the daughter, Laura, plans to deceive her mother by pretending to practice her typing for college when in reality, she hadn’t been practicing at all. However, mother quickly realizes that she wasn’t practicing and that she hadn’t been practicing for the entire winter season, as she had originally thought. However, this is not the only time mother is deceived by one of her children. Though this one wasn’t as blatantly obvious as Laura’s deception, the son, Tom, has also deceived Amanda. Amanda is portrayed to be a victim in a world of her own, but she also seems to be consciously aware at the exact same time. Every night Tom told her that he was away going to see a movie, but really he was using his hours off of work as an escape from the life he’d learned to hate; he feels constantly restricted and those hours between midnight and two A.M. are the only times he gets a taste of freedom. Why do both children of the mother fear her disapproval? What will she do once this deception is shed into light and why were Laura and Tom afraid to confront her until now?

  1. Amanda is always on her children back about the way SHE wants them to live their lives. I can understand why her children didn't tell her until now, because of her reaction. Amanda, to me, is very close minded and thinks that her way of thinking is the only way of thinking. Laura and Tom both seem to be aware of this by their choice of keeping their actions a secret.
